MEDITATION - MINDFULNESS OF BREATHING
The Mindfulness of Breathing is aimed at calming and focusing the mind. Calm is required to experience yourself more fully on a level that could allow for positive growth.
The breath is a very accessible and simple means for becoming focussed. It is the very basis on which our lives continue. Becoming aware of this vital function of the body potentially allows for a strong practice of awareness to ensue, and a fuller experience of existence.
In the Mindfulness of Breathing, as practiced and taught in the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, there are four stages that allow for deeper and deeper engagement with the breath. The practice is not about trying to consider nothing and emptying the mind. Instead there is the gentle return to the breath every time you find that your thoughts have wandered off in various directions. Maintaining a focus on the breath through the mechanisms of the practice, brings a sense of calm that allows the mind to become quieter and could lead to more positive emotional states. Views that are held about self and the world could be altered through this positive and balancing practice, allowing for a generally more positive experience of life.
The Mindfulness of Breathing can be a tool in day-to-day existence and the practice is not limited to sitting on the cushion. In many situations it is helpful and the more meditation is practiced, the greater the effect can be seen in life itself.
Meditation in a busy city like Johannesburg is a helpful way to become more engaged with yourself and society around you. Awareness and appreciation of self leads to awareness and appreciation of others. And this could lead to a better, more positive environment.
So come along to Shantikula in Johannesburg and learn to meditate. Our programme has regular Monday night slots for group meditations, and you can learn in this context. Or if you would be interested in individual tuition or courses contact us and we can chat further about how to accommodate your situation.
